About the workshop

In this workshop, you will learn the Japanese art of Suminagashi, a meditative process of creating patterns with ink in water. You will experiment with different techniques and create one-of-a-kind decorative papers.

En este taller, aprenderás el arte japonés del Suminagashi, un proceso meditativo para crear patrones con tinta en agua. Experimentarás con diferentes técnicas y crearás papeles decorativos únicos.

About the artist

Sage Serrano is a San Diego-based artist. She received her MFA in Art from San Diego State University and her BA in Visual Arts Studio with honors from UC San Diego. For her, drawing is a meditative process that helps her recollect and reflect on personal experiences and memories. Her research is a culmination of drawing and paper experimentations, exploring line, the body, play, and collecting.

Serrano has extensive knowledge and experience in various bookbinding, papermaking, and paper-folding techniques. Her artist books are held in special collections and she has exhibited her drawings in various exhibitions across the United States and internationally. She is currently a visiting lecturer at Point Loma Nazarene University and a lecturer at San Diego State University, where she teaches drawing, two-dimensional design, life drawing, and book arts. Serrano also teaches bookmaking, papermaking, and decorative paper workshops at libraries, high schools, colleges, and universities across California.

Sage Serrano es una artista originaria de San Diego, CA. Obtuvo su Maestría en Bellas Artes en Arte de la Universidad Estatal de San Diego y su Licenciatura en Estudio de Artes Visuales con honores de la Universidad de California en San Diego. Para ella, el dibujo es un proceso meditativo que la ayuda a recordar y reflexionar sobre experiencias y recuerdos personales. Su investigación es el resultado de experimentaciones en dibujo y papel, explorando la línea, el cuerpo, el juego y la colección. Serrano tiene amplios conocimientos y experiencia en diversas técnicas de encuadernación, fabricación de papel y plegado de papel. Sus libros de artista se encuentran en colecciones especiales y ha exhibido sus dibujos en varias exposiciones en Estados Unidos e internacionalmente. Actualmente es profesora visitante en la Universidad de Point Loma Nazarene y profesora en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego, donde imparte clases de dibujo, diseño bidimensional, dibujo de la figura y artes del libro. Además, Serrano enseña talleres de encuadernación, fabricación de papel y papel decorativo en bibliotecas, escuelas secundarias, colegios y universidades en todo California.
