From Our Hands to Your Hands
Mural Artist: Esteban Sánchez
September 2025
This mural celebrates the traditions of food, family, and togetherness at Addis Ethiopian Restaurant. The artwork shows an intimate scene of a shared Ethiopian meal on a mesob, the traditional woven platter, with injera and an array of colorful dishes arranged on top. Hands of different ages reach in to eat, symbolizing community across generations, and each sleeve is adorned with patterns inspired by colorful Ethiopian textiles.
The mural also honors Ethiopia’s iconic coffee tradition. A hand pours coffee from a jebena into a cini cup, with a coffee plant resting on one saucer, nodding to the deep roots of coffee in Ethiopian culture. This moment captures the spirit of Addis, where people linger for hours, sharing stories, laughter, and the slow, ceremonial rhythm of drinking coffee together. A yellow meskel flower motif in the background ties in elements requested by the community, adding warmth and continuity to the scene.
Rendered in an organic, paper-cutout-inspired style, the mural uses earthy, warm tones that harmonize with the restaurant’s colors of red, green, and beige. Strong contrast ensures the mesob and shared food remain the focal point, drawing the eye to the heart of the experience: connection through delicious food and the joy of sharing meals and time together.
This mural was created in partnership with Akitso, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing equity in the food industry through design. ArtReach extends our deepest gratitude to the 50+ community of all ages (ranging from 2 years old to 90!) who contributed their time in helping paint the mural. We also extend our deepest gratitude to Fekad and Alem who kept us fed with the most delicious food throughout our process of working at Addis.
