This front-of-school mural is located at Monterey Heights STEAM Academy of Lemon Grove School District. Designed by Katy Yeaw, it serves to welcome students, families, and neighbors to a bright and colorful campus community.
ArtReach worked with 25 Monterey Heights students through a series of 6 after-school mural workshops both in design ideation and mural painting. The mural imagery primarily features the Monterey Heights mascot, the majestic eagle, depicted in full flight. With bold strokes, it charts a course through the sky, illuminating various constellations intertwined with STEAM symbols such as the atom, gear, and musical note. The rising sun behind the eagle symbolizes new beginnings and a bright outlook for the future. Together, these elements combine to create a larger-than-life canvas that instills hope, fosters pride in the STEAM curriculum, and extends a warm welcome to all who enter the school.
