The Sun Leads/Donde El Sol Nos Guía
Mural Artist: Regan Russell
March 2025
This mural was designed by artist Regan Russell in collaboration with students and staff at Innovation High School of Learn4Life in Chula Vista.
Rooted in themes of growth, perseverance, and connection, this mural reflects the aspirations and experiences of the Innovation High students and community it represents. Inspired by student and staff feedback, the design highlights the unique spirit of San Diego and Chula Vista, celebrating both the natural beauty of the region and the personal journeys of students who are attending school here.
At the heart of the composition, the sun serves as a powerful cultural symbol—a guiding force of warmth and direction. Its presence nurtures students on their paths (like the incredibly dedicated Learn4Life staff), offering light and energy as they grow and succeed. Below, the waves illustrate the ebb and flow of life, acknowledging both challenges and triumphs. These waves dynamically push forward, leading toward the entrance of the school as a visual metaphor for progress and momentum.
Carnations and dahlias—the official flowers of San Diego and Mexico—represent the deep-rooted connection between these places and the school community. They also symbolize the personal and academic growth of students, culminating in success. The sun’s face, with a pensive yet welcoming expression, exudes warmth and acceptance, offering a space free of judgment, encouraging all who see it.
The mural as a whole embodies a sense of place, belonging, and resilience, ensuring that those who pass by are reminded of their journey and the community that supports them.
