Mural Artist: Esteban Sánchez
August 2025
This vibrant mural was designed by artist Esteban Sánchez as part of a broader campus renovation aimed at creating a more welcoming and inspiring environment for students. Informed by feedback gathered from the Rowan Elementary community, the artwork reflects a thoughtful balance between vibrant and earthy aesthetics.
At the center of the mural is a symbolic image of a hand offering flowers to another, that sets a tone of kindness, inclusion, and possibility. Instead of filling every space, the design stays open and uncluttered, creating a calm, focused feel that encourages reflection and connection. Every plant featured in the mural is a real native flower found in San Diego’s local canyons, including those near Rowan. These include the California Bluebell, California Bush Sunflower (Brittlebush), and the California Poppy, each one chosen to root the piece in a strong sense of place.
ArtReach was thrilled to host a Community Paint Day, where students, staff, and families were invited to contribute to the mural and connect over the summer break. This mural is a visual representation of the values expressed by the Rowan community: care, collaboration, and connection. It now stands as a lasting part of the renovated campus, offering students a daily reminder of the beauty that surrounds them.
